Founder of the Baroque, who replaced Mannerism towards the end of the 16th century, was the Italian Caravaggio, whose realistic chiaroscuro style was groundbreaking throughout Europe.
In addition to religious painting, the baroque brought out more profane depictions, such as genre paintings and landscapes.
Stylistically, one leaned on the High Renaissance, but clearly exaggerated into the theatrical.
The focus of Flemish Baroque painting is Peter Paul Rubens and in the Dutch especially Rembrandt.
Other well-known examples of Baroque painting are Vermeer, José de Ribera, Jan van Delft and Diego Velázquez.
